June 09, 2009

Local residents complain that there have been serious wrecks at the same intersection of Pocosin Road and N.C. 903 South where Monday's dump truck collision occurred. A helicopter was required to airlift one of the occupants to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The Dump Truck was operated by Jasper Jones and owned by Jasper Jones Trucking. The North Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the collision and reported that the driver of the dump truck attempted to swerve when the driver of a Buick vehicle made a left turn onto the highway from Pocosin Road, but the dump truck collided with the driver's side of the Buick. The Buick was so badly damaged that the roof had to be removed by the Winterville Fire Department in order to extricate the driver for transport to the hospital. Area residents question why the intersection has not been evaluated by the State for modification given the previous accidents at this same intersection.
